About The Ministry
Mtendere Orphanage is located on the grounds of Blessings Hospital in Malawi and is home to 134 orphans living in 16 family style homes. The mission of Mtendere is to empower children and families toward a more hopeful and productive future through education, stability, and spiritual growth. Children attend local primary schools during the day and receive additional tutoring and support at home.
Previously, students left Mtendere after ninth grade to attend boarding schools, which created challenges in maintaining spiritual support and consistent guidance. To address this, a Christian high school was built on site, allowing students to continue their education within the community they call home.
How We Are Serving
The Sara Walker Foundation became involved with Mtendere through a Spirit led opportunity pursued by Sara’s brother, Michael Pigg, who led a fact finding trip to the orphanage in 2014 alongside other education professionals. Since that time, the Foundation has partnered with Lipscomb Missions to fund annual education focused mission trips to Mtendere.
Through these trips, educators provide training and resources for both primary and secondary teachers, focusing on effective teaching strategies, literacy development, and student engagement. From interactive read alouds to guided notes and classroom discussions, these efforts equip teachers to better serve their students while sharing Christ’s love. We are grateful to support this work and excited to see how God continues to move in the lives of the children and educators at Mtendere.
